Frequently Asked Questions

Product & Fit

What is Vial Safe and how does it protect my insulin?

Vial Safe® is a medical-grade silicone sleeve that wraps around your insulin vial to protect it from breaking if dropped. Vial Safe® is the original insulin vial protector — a durable, medical-grade silicone sleeve that fits snugly around your 10mL or 20mL insulin vial to prevent breakage from drops and impacts. The patented open-top design means you never need to remove the protector to draw insulin or refill a pump reservoir. Simply insert your vial once and leave it protected at all times. Invented in 2010 by a Type 2 diabetic, Vial Safe® is now trusted by hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide.

What insulin brands and vial sizes does Vial Safe fit?

Vial Safe® fits every brand of insulin on the market. We make insulin vial protectors for Fiasp, Humalog, Humulin, Novolin, Novolog, NovoRapid, Lispro, Lyumjev, Tresiba, Levemir, Vetsulin, Caninsulin, Insulin Aspart, Lantus, Apidra, Admelog, and ProZinc. No other insulin vial protector brand covers as many vial sizes and insulin types as Vial Safe®. Browse all brands →

Does Vial Safe work for pet insulin vials?

Yes. Vial Safe® fits all common pet insulin brands including Vetsulin, ProZinc, and Caninsulin used for diabetic dogs and cats. We make protectors for both standard 10mL vials and the larger 20mL ProZinc vials. Pet insulin is expensive — Vetsulin costs $75 to $150 per vial and ProZinc can run over $150 per vial — and pet insulin vials are handled frequently, often by multiple family members. A single Vial Safe® protector costs a fraction of one replacement vial and prevents the kind of accidental drop that can waste an entire month's supply of pet insulin.

Do I need to remove the vial to draw out my insulin?

No. The patented open-top design means your vial stays protected at all times — just insert the syringe or pen needle through the top and draw your dose as usual. You can also refill an insulin pump reservoir without removing the protector. No fumbling, no removing, no risk of dropping an unprotected vial. Shop Vial Safe by brand →

What is the difference between an insulin vial protector and an insulin cooler case?

An insulin vial protector prevents breakage from drops; an insulin cooler case prevents temperature damage during travel. They solve different problems and many people use both. An insulin vial protector like Vial Safe® is a silicone sleeve that prevents your glass vial from shattering if dropped. It stays on the vial 24/7 and adds virtually no bulk. An insulin cooler case is a larger, insulated bag or pouch designed to keep insulin at the correct temperature during travel — it protects against heat and cold, but does nothing to prevent breakage from drops. They solve different problems: Vial Safe® protects against physical breakage, a cooler case protects against temperature damage. Many of our customers use both together — Vial Safe® on the vial, inside a cooler case when traveling.

Pet Insulin

What size Vial Safe fits my pet’s insulin vial?

It depends on the brand your vet prescribed. Vetsulin and Caninsulin come in standard 10mL vials — our regular 10mL protector fits them perfectly. ProZinc is available in both 10mL and 20mL sizes, and Vial Safe makes a dedicated protector for each. Check the volume printed on your vial’s label and match it to the corresponding size on our site.

How does Vial Safe protect my cat’s insulin vial?

The same way it protects human insulin — a snug, medical-grade silicone sleeve wraps around the vial from top to bottom, absorbing impact if it’s dropped. The open-top, draw-through design means you can insert the syringe and draw insulin without removing the vial from the protector. For cats on ProZinc or Vetsulin, this is especially valuable since pet insulin vials are handled frequently — often by multiple family members — and a single drop can mean losing a vial worth $75 to $150 or more.

Can I use Vial Safe to protect my dog’s insulin vial?

Yes. Vetsulin and Caninsulin — the most commonly prescribed insulin brands for dogs — use standard 10mL vials that fit our regular 10mL protector. If your dog is on ProZinc, we also make protectors specifically sized for ProZinc 10mL and 20mL vials. The protector stays on during use, so whoever in your household handles injection duty can draw insulin without any extra steps.

Do I need a separate protector for ProZinc 10mL and 20mL vials?

Yes — ProZinc 10mL and 20mL vials are different diameters and heights, so each requires its own protector size. Vial Safe makes a dedicated fit for both. When you shop ProZinc protectors, you’ll see the 10mL and 20mL options listed separately. Using the correct size ensures a snug fit with full coverage, which is what makes the protector effective if the vial is dropped. If you’re unsure which size your pet uses, check the label or ask your veterinarian.

Insulin Safety & Education

What happens if I drop my insulin vial?

An unprotected insulin vial can shatter from a drop of just two to three feet, wasting $30 to $300+ worth of medication. Insulin vials are made of thin borosilicate glass and can shatter from a drop as short as two to three feet — roughly counter height. A broken vial means lost medication, potential glass contamination in the insulin, and an unplanned replacement cost that can range from $30 for a biosimilar to over $300 for a brand-name vial without insurance. People with Type 1 diabetes typically use two to three vials per month, so even one broken vial can disrupt an entire month's supply. Vial Safe® prevents this by encasing your vial in a durable silicone sleeve that absorbs impact from drops. The protector stays on at all times — while you draw insulin, store it in the fridge, or carry it in a bag — so your vial is always protected.

Can I use insulin from a cracked or broken vial?

Do not use insulin from a cracked or broken vial unless your doctor or pharmacist says otherwise. If your insulin vial is cracked, chipped, or shattered, it’s generally best not to use it — but always follow the guidance of your doctor or pharmacist, as they can advise based on your specific situation. Broken glass may shed microscopic particles into the liquid, and most healthcare providers recommend against injecting from a compromised vial due to potential risks at the injection site. Even if the crack looks minor and the insulin appears clear, there’s typically no reliable way to confirm the liquid is unaffected at home. When in doubt, contact your pharmacy — many can assist with emergency replacements. This is exactly why Vial Safe® exists: to prevent breakage before it happens, so you never have to make that call.

How much does it cost to replace a broken insulin vial?

Replacing a broken insulin vial costs $30 to $350+ depending on the brand and your insurance. It depends on the brand and your insurance. At retail without insurance, a single vial of Humalog or Novolog can cost $275 to $350. Lantus can cost $300 or more. Biosimilar options like insulin lispro (generic Humalog) can bring the cost down to around $30 to $75 per vial with coupons. With insurance, most people pay $25 to $100 per vial depending on their plan and deductible. All three major manufacturers — Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi — now offer $35-per-month cap programs for eligible patients. Regardless of your cost, a broken vial is wasted money and a disruption to your care. A Vial Safe® protector costs a fraction of even the cheapest replacement vial and lasts indefinitely.

How long does a vial of insulin last once opened?

Once opened, most insulin vials are typically good for around 28 days at room temperature, though this varies by brand and insulin type, so it’s always worth confirming with your doctor or pharmacist. As a general reference, some brands like Humulin R and Humulin N may last up to 31 days, Levemir up to 42 days, and Tresiba up to 56 days, but your healthcare provider’s guidance should take precedence over any general rule. Unopened vials stored in the refrigerator (36°F to 46°F) are generally good until the manufacturer’s expiration date. A good habit most providers recommend: write the date you opened the vial on the label. And since each vial has a limited use window, dropping or breaking one mid-cycle can mean losing days or weeks of remaining medication, which is another reason Vial Safe® is worth having on every vial.

How should I store my insulin vials?

Unopened insulin vials are generally recommended to be stored in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C), though your pharmacist or doctor can confirm what’s best for your specific insulin. Most providers advise keeping vials away from the freezer and from the back of the fridge where temperatures can sometimes dip below freezing, as frozen insulin is typically considered permanently damaged and should be discarded. Once opened, many insulins can be kept at room temperature between 59°F and 86°F (15°C to 30°C) for up to 28 days, but again, always check with your healthcare provider for guidance specific to your brand. General best practices include keeping insulin away from direct sunlight, car dashboards, and windowsills. Many people find that injecting cold insulin straight from the fridge can be uncomfortable, so keeping an in-use vial at room temperature is a common approach. Vial Safe®’s silicone sleeve provides a layer of thermal insulation and helps protect the vial from accidental contact with surfaces that are too hot or too cold.

Travel

Is Vial Safe TSA-friendly? Can I travel with it?

Yes — Vial Safe is TSA-friendly and can travel with you in your carry-on bag. Based on current TSA guidelines, insulin and insulin-related supplies including vials, syringes, needles, pen devices, and pump supplies are generally permitted through airport security. Vial Safe® is simply a protective silicone sleeve around your vial, similar in concept to a phone case, and should not present any issues at screening. That said, TSA policies can change, so it’s always a good idea to check the TSA website or contact your airline directly before you fly to confirm the latest guidance. When traveling, most healthcare providers recommend keeping insulin in your carry-on bag rather than checked luggage, as cargo hold temperatures can vary significantly and may affect your insulin. Vial Safe® helps protect your vial from the bumps, drops, and jostling that commonly happen during travel, in airports, hotels, and on the go.

Care & Durability

Is Vial Safe reusable? How long does it last?

Yes — Vial Safe® is designed to last indefinitely. The medical-grade silicone is hypoallergenic, non-porous, and will not degrade, crack, or yellow over time. One Vial Safe® will outlast hundreds of insulin vials. It is one of the only diabetes accessories you will never need to replace.

How do I clean my Vial Safe protector?

Simply wash it with warm water and mild soap, then let it air dry. The medical-grade silicone is non-porous, so it resists bacteria buildup and does not absorb odors or stains. Your Vial Safe® will look and perform like new for years.

Is Vial Safe HSA or FSA eligible?

Yes. Vial Safe® is eligible for purchase with HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds. You can use your pre-tax health benefit dollars to buy Vial Safe® protectors, making it even more affordable to protect your insulin investment.
